Scrapstore Rotherham

Scrapstore is a registered charity (started in 1980) that provides resources for anyone working with children. It sells clean and safe waste from businesses and also low-cost new materials for art, craft and play activities. Members include children’s groups and parents across South Yorkshire. Scrapstore also delivers workshops for children and parents to encourage them to enjoy being creative together. Such fun and creativity helps in developing relationships, communication, skills and has many social benefits.

The chair of Scrapstore attended an advice surgery in April 2010 requesting support about relocating from Sheffield to Rotherham and about the future sustainability of the charity. Scrapstore also felt that TfR would be able to help enable the project to form key links within Rotherham, to establish a presence in town and provide advice on how to further develop the project. Following the surgery, the TfR adviser continued to support Scrapstore by helping to prepare a draft budget sheet for the Management Committee to think about potential future funding costs for the project. Links have now been made with Rotherham’s Children and Young people Consortia and Scrapstore Rotherham is progressing well with its development ideas.

“Links developed as a result [of TfR support] are very positive and ongoing. It was good to be able to tell our story and be given concrete actions and links to pursue. Suggested links give hope for more sustainability.”
Jenny Lambourne, Chair

On Tuesday 20th July 2010 TfR adviser Mark Lavender performed the opening ceremony for Scrapstore Rotherham for business to commence in its new premises in the markets. Mark comments that “it’s wonderful that from August children and adults will have the opportunity on Tuesdays and Fridays (10.00-3.00) to access free craft activities. Scrapstore is a valuable resource to Rotherham and beyond and we at TfR want to make sure that the opportunities for such groups to exist continues and prospers”.
