RUFC Community Sports Trust - Press Release

Millers shortlisted again

On the back of being shortlisted last year for Community Club of the year, Rotherham United Community Sports Trust has this year nominated, for Best Community Project with, ‘United 4 Communities’ Social Inclusion Project at this year’s Football League Awards, held at Grosvenor House on 14th March. This is promoting a unified message of, ‘One Town, One Community’.

The project is funded by The Football League Trust and RMBC and targets specific communities by using Football as a vehicle to engage and helping to build community structure and social capital within the different ethnic and faith communities of Rotherham.  It also looks to create a safe and supportive environment, which hopefully breaks down the barriers and promotes community integration and cohesion.

Dale Spiby said; “We are delighted and honoured to be nominated for this prestigious award by the Football League. This project is the collimation of a great deal of hard work by all our community team and we are pleased to get the recognition on a national level.”

The judges said; “In 2009, Rotherham United have been going deep into the heart of their community by organising activities in pockets of Rotherham where there was little quality sport delivery due to lack of provisions. Between January 2009 and December 2009 Rotherham United worked with over 3,700 Black and Ethnic Minority individuals as well as 4878 girls. It is clear from the results that ‘United 4 Communities’ is a well thought through and well managed project. The concept itself is excellent as it works at bridging gaps by connecting different parts of the community. The judges were impressed how they have levered extra funding from a wide range of agencies whilst building good partnerships which have much potential for leaving behind a successful legacy. By encouraging those who are often guilty of anti-social behavior in the evenings to get involved in their local football club, Rotherham Utd is bringing the community together in a positive way.”
